Building the Ultimate Racing Machine: Andrew Porter's Custom Megalodon Minibike
From Stock Kit to 20+ Horsepower Race Beast - A Complete Build Story
The Challenge: Building a Race-Ready Beast
When professional racer Andrew Porter approached our team at Go Power Sports with a simple request - "Can you make me a new bike?" - we knew we had our work cut out for us. His previous race bike had blown up after the grueling GPS 180 race, and he needed something that could handle anything: mud, rough terrain, and the punishment of competitive racing.
But this wasn't just any build request. Andrew needed a machine that was tough, rugged, packed with power, and reliable enough to go the distance. Enter the Megalodon Minibike Kit - our flagship full-suspension minibike that would serve as the foundation for what would become one of our most impressive custom builds to date.
The Foundation: Megalodon 212 Full Suspension Kit
The journey began with our Mega Moto 212 Minibike Kit, but this wasn't going to be a standard build. We upgraded to the full Megalodon configuration, which includes:
- Full front and rear suspension for maximum comfort and control
- Hydraulic disc brakes front and rear for superior stopping power
- Reinforced frame construction built to handle serious abuse
- 19" off-road tires for aggressive terrain capability
The Megalodon represents the pinnacle of minibike engineering - combining the reliability of our proven Mega Moto platform with professional-grade suspension and braking systems.
Heart of the Beast: 225cc High-Performance Engine
While the standard Megalodon comes with a 212cc engine, Andrew's racing demands called for something more substantial. We equipped his build with a 225cc high-performance engine that we've tuned to deliver over 20 horsepower.
Engine Modifications Include:
- Shred Head Performance Cylinder Head with enlarged ports for maximum airflow
- Champion Rocker Arms for improved valve train reliability
- GPS 285 Performance Camshaft for aggressive power delivery
- Custom port work to optimize flow characteristics
This powerplant transformation takes the bike from a fun recreational machine to a serious racing contender capable of competing with much larger displacement bikes.
Suspension Perfection: Rear Swing Arm Kit
One of the most dramatic upgrades was the installation of our Mega Moto 212 Rear Swing Arm Kit. This isn't just about comfort - it's about performance and durability.
Key Advantages:
- Adjustable nitrogen shocks allow fine-tuning for different riding conditions
- Increased rear wheel travel for better bump absorption
- Improved weight distribution for enhanced handling
- Bolt-on installation requiring no welding or permanent modifications
The swing arm completely transforms the bike's character, allowing Andrew to attack rough terrain with confidence while maintaining control at high speeds.
Precision Control: Billet Handlebar Risers
Racing demands precise control, which is why we upgraded to 7/8" Billet Handlebar Risers. These aren't just about looks - they serve critical performance functions:
- Increased handlebar height for better rider positioning
- Improved leverage for easier steering input
- Enhanced comfort during long racing sessions
- Professional appearance that matches the bike's performance capabilities
We also welded a cross-brace between the handlebars for additional rigidity - a trick we use on all our race bikes to prevent flex under hard cornering.
Rolling on Excellence: 10" Machined Aluminum Wheels
The wheel and tire combination can make or break a racing bike's performance. Andrew's Megalodon features our 10" GPS Machined Aluminum Wheels - a significant upgrade from standard steel wheels.
Performance Benefits:
- Reduced unsprung weight for better suspension performance
- Increased strength to handle racing abuse
- Improved heat dissipation for better brake performance
- Professional appearance that commands respect on the track
These wheels are paired with aggressive off-road tires that provide exceptional traction in all conditions.
Extended Range: Dual Tank Fuel System
Racing isn't just about speed - it's about endurance. That's why we implemented a dual tank fuel system using our innovative UniTank technology.
The system features:
- Primary UniTank (.9 gallon capacity) feeding into the stock tank
- Extended range allowing nearly 3 hours of continuous racing
- Reliable fuel delivery even in extreme riding conditions
- Easy refueling for quick pit stops
This setup proved its worth during the GPS 180 race, where the bike ran almost the entire 3-hour event on a single fill-up.
Power Delivery: Juggernaut Torque Converter System
Getting all that power to the ground efficiently requires the right drivetrain components. We equipped Andrew's bike with our Juggernaut Super 30 Series Driver and tuning components.
System Features:
- 3,000-3,500 RPM stall speed for optimal power delivery
- Improved belt grip for reduced slippage
- Enhanced durability for racing applications
- Tunable engagement for different racing conditions
The Juggernaut system ensures that every bit of the engine's power reaches the rear wheel when and where it's needed most.
Premium Chain Technology: RLV High-Performance Chain
Even the chain received special attention. We installed RLV 420 High-Performance Racing Chain with its impressive 5,000-pound tensile strength - far exceeding standard chain capabilities.
This premium chain provides:
- Superior strength for high-power applications
- Reduced stretch for consistent performance
- Enhanced durability for extended racing use
- Professional appearance with gold-on-black finish
The Build Process: Father and Son Teamwork
What made this build truly special wasn't just the components - it was watching Taylor work alongside his son Henry to bring Andrew's vision to life. The build process showcased not only technical expertise but also the passion that drives our team at Go Power Sports.
From installing bearings to routing cables, every step was executed with precision and attention to detail. The collaboration between father and son added a personal touch that reflects our company's family-oriented culture.
Race-Proven Performance
This isn't just a show bike - it's a proven performer. The original Megalodon platform that served as inspiration for this build achieved 6th place out of 125 bikes in the GPS 180 race. Andrew's enhanced version takes that proven performance to the next level.
The Complete Package
When Andrew takes delivery of his custom Megalodon, he'll receive more than just a minibike - he'll get a complete racing machine that's been engineered, tested, and refined for serious competition. Every component has been selected and installed with one goal in mind: giving Andrew the tools he needs to win.
