How to Choose the Right Pushrod Length for a Predator 212 Mini Bike Engine
A simple cam swap can be straightforward. A custom engine combination is different. Here’s how to avoid guessing when it is time to choose pushrods.
Changing a camshaft, installing roller rockers, milling a head, changing lifters, or building a higher-performance Predator 212 or Honda-clone engine can all affect valvetrain geometry. That means the pushrod length that worked in one engine may not be the right answer for yours.
On a recent Minibikin’ Ain’t Eazy episode, Paul Crafton of PC Motorworks broke down the practical way to approach the question: a straightforward 265-cam setup may retain the original geometry, but once your build has multiple changes, the right move is to mock it up and measure.

There is no universal “Predator 212 pushrod length.” If your engine has more than a simple, known combination, measure your specific setup before ordering.
Why pushrod length changes
Pushrods connect your cam and lifters to the rocker arms. Their job sounds simple, but their length directly affects how the rocker arm travels across the valve tip. When the engine’s stack-up changes, so can the length you need.
- Camshaft changes: Different cams can have different base circles and lift profiles.
- Milled heads or thinner head gaskets: Reducing deck-to-head distance changes the valvetrain relationship.
- Billet, roller, or ratio rocker arms: Rocker style and ratio can alter the geometry.
- Different lifters, valves, retainers, or head components: Small changes add up quickly.
- Deck-height changes and custom builds: Once the engine is no longer a standard combination, measuring beats guessing.
Start with your exact engine combination
Before shopping for rods, write down what is actually inside your engine. “Predator 212” is only the beginning of the conversation.
Non-Hemi Predator, Hemi Predator, Honda GX200, Tillotson, or clone engines can call for different starting points.
Note the cam, rockers, head, gasket thickness, lifters, valves, and any machining already done.
Assemble the combination far enough to check geometry before final assembly.
How to measure pushrod length the smart way
- Use an adjustable pushrod tool. An adjustable tool lets you establish the required length on your actual engine instead of relying on a generic recommendation.
- Use light checking springs for mock-up. Do not try to turn the engine over against your heavy performance springs while you are checking length and motion.
- Rotate the engine through multiple cycles. Watch for smooth motion and make sure nothing binds.
- Measure the adjustable tool with a caliper. That measurement gives you the real starting point for your engine combination.
- Choose the appropriate ready-made size—or cut-to-length option. If your build falls between standard offerings, a custom-length solution may be the right call.
What about the 265 cam?
This was the question that started the conversation. In a basic direct-replacement 265-cam combination, you may not need to change pushrod length or rocker geometry. But that does not automatically apply when the engine also has a milled head, different gasket, performance rockers, aftermarket lifters, or other valvetrain changes.
The takeaway: a 265 cam alone may be simple—but your whole engine combination determines the final answer.
